"And I am telling you I'm not going."
I know that I might get some flack for this. I mean, I already know who's going to leave comments here making fun of me for what I am about to admit to doing and enjoying. But, I don't care. I want to see all of the Oscar nominated movies before the ceremony. And so I saw Dreamgirls...
Running Time: 2 hrs. 5 mins.
Directed By: Bill Condon
Starring: Jamie Foxx, Beyonce Knowles, Eddie Murphy, Jennifer Hudson, Anika Noni Rose
First, let's talk about the fact that this is a movie musical. And, as some of you know, movie musicals are either really good or really horrible. This one was really good.
So, what was good?
-Eddie Murphy is at his absolute best as an actor in this movie. I say "as an actor" because I think that his best is actually somewhere between Coming to America and The Nutty Professor. But the range that he shows in the role of James "Thunder" Early is remarkable.
-The pacing was great. Some musicals get too booged down in plot, and don't have enough music. Some get lost in music and leave out the story. This one actually lives on it's songs, but uses it's scenes of dialogue to move the story along.
-Jennifer Hudson. Simply stated. You've heard the press. She got the Golden Globe. She's in line for the Oscar. She is amazing. Her voice takes over the movie when she sings. But, I can't help but wonder, is she really due all of the credit she's getting? Effie is, without a doubt, the best part in the movie. And, during the original broadway run of the musical, the original Effie, Jennifer Holiday, received the same amount of press. *To see what I'm talking about, check out the video at the bottom of this post. Would Beyonce have been praised like this if she would have played Effie? Even if she doesn't have the voice for the part.
-There were some super sweet Cameos. Jim from the office, Urkel, and John Lithgow all appear in this movie.
-Honestly, Beyonce is probably the only weak part in this movie. And, much like I said of Jennifer Hudson, I'm not sure if it's her or her part. Deena (her part) is a wuss for most of the movie. Don't get me wrong, I think Beyonce is a HORRIBLE actress. If you doubt this, just watch any movie she's been in. She always sings because she can't rely on her acting talent alone. But I don't know if this is the movie that will prove how bad or how good she is. She just kind of exists here...
And so, to Dreamgirls, I give the honor of being awarded a certified 4 ½ Yarmulke™ rating.
I loved this movie! It's definitely an opening night film. Make sure you see it before Oscar night. Now, enjoy Jennifer Holiday singing what started it all for Dreamgirls, "And I am Telling You I'm Not Going"...
