Act Naturally...

Here's some music history for you...

About two months ago I was able to go to see Third Day in concert as a part of the Music Builds tour. As one of the closing numbers, Mac Powell (lead singer of Third Day) called out Robert Randolph and the members of Jars of Clay and they all played a song called Act Naturally. Here's a little sampling of what it was like...

So, about a week ago, the song popped back in my head. All I remembered about it was the line, "They're gonna put me in the movies...", and that it was an old Buck Owens tune. So, I did what I always do when I'm looking for a song: I type the line, in quotes, into Google. I got the name and typed that into YouTube. But what I found confused me.

The first entry that popped up was a performance of the song by The Beatles. Heard of 'em? So I thought, "Well The Beatles were obviously before Buck Owens. So Buck must have covered the song from them." Oh yeah, here's Buck performing the song.

So I went to wikipedia. Turns out, Buck performed the song originally. When The Beatles were recording their Help! album, they realized when they were almost done that Ringo didn't have a vocal on the album yet. So they recorded the song as a way to showcase Ringo's "amiable" vocals.

So there you have it. The Beatles recorded a Buck Owens country song. And the first time I heard it was from Third Day...
