Bailey...

Editor's Note: I've been holding on to this post for a while. Truth is, it just made me so sad to write it! But I think I can handle it now...

A few weeks ago, I house sat for some of my friends as they went on vacation. Part of my responsibilities was to take care of their dog, Bailey.

Bailey is the quintessential dog. Lots of energy. Always excited to see you. Super loving. She's just a great dog. Which is why, I was so sad when she got sick back in December.

You see, one night she started to limp on her front left leg. My friend, Micah, thought it was weird. So he checked her foot and leg for any thorns or wounds. When he didn't find anything, he dismissed it as Bailey just wanting attention. Pretty soon, one of her joints started swelling up and her limp got worse.

He took her to the vet in January and was told that there was cancer in the joint. So then, he was presented with two choices: he could have her leg removed or... you know...

So here's what they chose...

When I was here a few weeks ago, it was the week after her leg had been removed plus her family was on vacation. So needless to say, Bailey was pretty sad.

And there is nothing sadder than a dog who is sad...

So when I came over today and she came running into the room to meet me and then jumped up onto my chest, I knew she was back to her old self!

I'm so glad... Because when Bailey's sad, everyone's sad...

Power Rankings: 9...

Power Rankings are worse than a zit on the tip of your nose on prom night. Unless I write them. Then they're better than finding a 20 dollar bill in your jeans just before you put them in the wash: awesome...

1. Up I saw it in Disney Digital 3D today. Wow... Do you remember what I wrote about WALL·E? Then you'll understand me better when I say this: Up might be Pixar's best movie. And with Pixar, that's saying something... (link)

2. The University of South Carolina As a Gamecock fan, can I just say that this both angers and embarrasses me? Really? We're going to brag about going .500? Ugh... (link)

3. Cameron's Dad's House Up For Sale You have reached the Coughlin Brothers Mortuary. We're deeply sorry we are not able to come to the phone right now, but if you leave your name and number, we will get back to you as soon as humanly possible... (link)

4. Gas Powered La-Z-Boy If I had one of these, I would never have to get up to go anywhere. I would also fit in around my home town a lot better... (link)

5. Junior Mints Who's gonna turn down a Junior Mint? It's chocolate, it's peppermint -it's delicious! It's very refreshing... (link)

Songs From the Year I was Born...

Last night, Jimmy Fallon had this year's American idol winner (Kris Allen) on his show (and Dennis Beckner in his audience). Jimmy asked about a few of the songs that he did on the show, including which ones Kris thought he didn't do great on. He said his performance of Don Henley's All She Wants to Do is Dance during "songs from the year they were born" week made him think he was doomed.

So I started to wonder; if I had to perform a song from my birth year (1980), what song would I choose?

After a thorough search of itunes (itunes store -> music -> itunes essentials -> your favorite year your favorite song -> 1980), I made a short list of the best songs 1980 had to offer...

  • Another Brick in the wall, Pt. 2- Pink Floyd
  • Another One Bites the Dust- Queen
  • Funkytown- Lipps, inc.
  • Rock With You- Michael Jackson
  • Whip It- Devo
  • Cars- Gary Numan
  • Crazy Little Thing Called Love- Queen
  • All Out of Love- Air Supply
  • The Rose- Bette Midler
  • On the Road Again- Willie Nelson
  • What I Like About You- The Romantics
  • Any Way You Want It- Journey
  • Heartbreaker- Pat Benatar
  • Could You Be Loved- Bob Marley
  • Theme from the Dukes of Hazzard (Good Ol' Boys)- Waylon Jennings
  • He Stopped Loving Her Today- George Jones

Editor's Note: Wow. Seeing what songs came out the year I was born makes me feel super old.

But I couldn't do all of them. So then I narrowed it down to five...

  • Rock With You- Michael Jackson
  • Crazy Little Thing Called Love- Queen
  • What I Like About You- The Romantics
  • Any Way You Want It- Journey
  • Theme from the Dukes of Hazzard (Good Ol' Boys)- Waylon Jennings

Hmm... There's probably no way they'd let me perform five songs. Time to eliminate three more...

  • Crazy Little Thing Called Love- Queen
  • What I Like About You- The Romantics

Oh my gosh. I would rock these songs harder than someone waiting for their name to get called at the Cracker Barrel. What? They only want to let me perform one song? Hmm... That's tougher...

OK, I'm going to go with Crazy Little Thing Called Love by Queen. It feels a little more melodic than What I Like About You plus you could speed it up or slow it down.

What song from your birth year would you perform...

    Homophone...

I don't know how this popped into my head, or why I think it's so funny, but I do...

    Get it? Awesome...

    Youtube Is the New Google...

I found myself needing to chop onions in preparation for supper tonight. But that is one culinary skill that has always challenged me. So, I took to the internet! But instead of heading to google for instruction, I went to youtube.

"How to dice an onion" yielded this result:

    Go youtube.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, here's how you chop broccoli ...

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian...

Looks like my review for Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian just went live at youthministry.com. Click on the link to go check it out...

Sam the Cooking Guy Vs. Kathy Lee and Hoda...

I'm a huge fan of Sam the Cooking Guy. I think he's got a great philosophy when it comes to food and, on top of that, seems like a pretty cool guy. When I was living in San Diego, it was always a dream of mine to be able to take a cooking lesson from him, but it never happened. Frowny face.

I was a little surprised (and disappointed I hadn't heard) to find out that Sam was on the Today show last summer. I was really surprised to find out what happened. Please to enjoy...

Wow. Sam losing his cool. That seems really unlike him (at least, in accordance with everything I've ever seen on his show).

What's crazy isn't that they had him back in August of last year, but that they pretty much tried to embarrass him. Not only did they bring in an etiquette expert, but they pretty much make it a point to interrupt him and make snide comments whenever they can...

Nothing like mature adults dealing with conflict.

Oh well, I still love Sam...

    AIS8: The Winner Is...

It's been a whole season and we've finally got a winner. And the best part is, it's the guy no one saw coming. Kris Allen won American idol last night in what was one of the most Hot Mess finales the series has ever had.

As for me, my record for picks this year rests at 6 for 13*. Slightly below 50%. I can live with that.

I've loved reading the mixture of reactions on the internet today. It's either "the wrong guy won and the world is going to fall apart" or "good for him, everyone deserves to win sometimes".

Truth is, I probably won't buy either of their albums anyway. Now Danny on the other hand...

    5/20/2009

    AIS8: Final Prediction Guess...

Here we are. Down to the final two...

After the first performances last night, I was ready to declare Kris the winner. But then, there were two other songs. And while Adam stayed on par with his usual level of talent, Kris faltered a bit, stumbling completely when his final song was just too high for his vocal range.

So, even though I'd love Kris to win, I think this competition (much like the whole season) belongs to Adam...

    In the Ayer...

I can't help but find humor in this...

My first flight on an airplane didn't happen until my junior year of college. It was such a huge deal at the time, that I took an entire roll of film's worth of pictures of nothing but clouds. And now, I feel like I'm on a plane every other month. Needless to say, the luster is gone...

But even though I don't get excited about the travel anymore, the destination is always great. I'm flying out today to Chicago to speak at a Junior High event. And while I've flown more times than I can count, I've never done a trip like this. I'm only going to be in Chicago for about 24 hours. Fly out this morning, fly back tomorrow.

So if you read this today, pray for me. Thanks...

    AIS8: Top Two...

Here it is ladies and gentlemen... Your final two singers!

I'm so sad that Danny isn't in the final. But after Kris' version of Heartless, I'm stoked to see what he does next week!

With my incorrect pick of who was going home this week, my record goes to 6 for 12*. I can't wait for the finale...

    It's Web Wednesday!

    AIS8: Top Three Prediction Guess...

My usual format for these recaps is to make a prediction in one post, and then report on that prediction's validity and make comments about the performances in another. But since this is the last week of regular competition, I'm going to switch things up. I'm going to make my comments, then my prediction in this post. It's pretty much going to be everything I typed up as I watched. Kind of a live blog. But before I get to that, here's EW's weekly totally biased power ranking of the singers. Here's Simon Cowell saying Adam will win.

    Boo yah...

    Danny Gokey
Judge's Choice: Dance Little Sister by Terence Trent D'arby (Paula)
  • Wow. He looks more like Robert Downey Jr. than ever tonight...
  • Uh Oh. He just danced a little. I'm sure he's going to get slammed for that!
  • And now he's going down in front of the judges. This is usually said to be a move of desperation...
  • I didn't like the song, but I really like his voice. I'm not sure the two matched very well though...
  • Randy: liked it, Kara: Yep. Talked about the dancing, Paula, liked it, Simon, second dancing comment. Vocally, very very good. He would've picked another song though...

    Kris Allen
Judge's Choice: Apologize by OneRepublic (Randy and Kara)
  • Vocally, he just can't compete with Adam and Danny...
  • His falsetto is really weak...
  • I love that he can play more than one instrument...
  • Randy: I can't remember what he said, Kara: Didn't like it, take more chances, Paula: Bum note, she's proud, Simon: Kara copped out, you can't choose a song for him and then fault him for doing the song! Wow. Kara just lost it on Simon. I hope they don't bring her back...

    Adam Lambert
Judge's Choice: One by U2 (Simon)
  • I got super excited to hear his version. But let down pretty fast...
  • I literally hate how he did this song. The phrasing, the speech, everything...
  • Randy: like, Kara: unbelievable (she's an idiot), Paula: calls him the American Idol, Simon: Brilliant, if he doesn't make it to the final, it will be the biggest upset ever...

    Danny Gokey
Singer's Choice: You Are So Beautiful by Joe Cocker
  • PERFECT choice...
  • There's a connection that i see in Adam's eyes when he sings that i don't see in Danny's...
  • He's sitting on a stool. Good move. No dance comments are possible now...
  • Simple arrangement. But different enough not to get blasted for being a copy...
  • Randy: you can really (x4) sing!, Kara: stunning, Paula: breathless, nailed it!, Simon: that was a vocal masterclass...

    Kris Allen
Singer's Choice: Heartless by Kanye West
  • What...
  • Acoustic guitar and voice. Wow...
  • I LOVED IT...
  • Whoa. Jaw unhinged again...
  • Randy: liked it, Kara: fearless, perfect, Paula: can't remember what she said, Simon: he had written Kris off until that performance (me too)...

    Adam Lambert
    Singer's Choice: Cryin' by Aerosmith
Is this a direct shot at Danny after last week? Maybe...
  • He has such diva-like mannerisms...
  • The song has been chopped up so much! Line from a verse here, then a bridge, then a chorus...
  • I think his voice worked with the song though...
  • Randy: One of the best ever on the stage, Kara: We'll see you at the finals?, Paula, We'll be seeing you next week and many years after that, Simon: He deserves to be in the final...

Going into tonight, I would've said for sure that Kris would be going home. But after his version of Heartless, along with such strong showings by the other two, it's a super close race. So this is a total guess based on what my heart wants: I think Kris is going home...

I guess we'll see tomorrow night...

Curious Josh: How To Become An Umpire...

Curious about the other posts in this series? Check them out here...

Every sports fan, no matter what team they pull for, has one thing in common: yelling at referees. No matter what sport you follow or what colors you wear, everyone agrees that refs are blind and that they could do a better job sleeping.

Well, here's your chance. I've always wondered how one becomes a ref or umpire. And today, I looked up. Turns out, there are special schools you have to attend as well as years of experience to be gained. It's actually tougher to become an ump in a major league game than it is to become a player.

Still want to pursue the dream of being one of hundreds to kick Bobby Cox out of a game? Check out more info here...

    Power Rankings: 8...

Power Rankings are the Michael Moore documentaries of the internet. They're boring, stupid, pretentious, and totally indulgent. Unless I write them. Then they boldly go where no one has gone before...

    1. New Pic of Tony Stark's Goatee (In the Suit) and Samuel L. Jackson On the Set If pictures keep getting released from this movie all the way up until it's released, no one will ever be able to take back the number one spot. Not even Tina Fey. By the way, count this as number #5... (link)

    2. Slo Mo Surfing In HD This is close to being the coolest thing I've ever seen. The only way I could think to improve it is if Tony Stark's goatee did it while wearing suitjamas... (link)

    3. Star Trek I haven't even seen it yet but I'm pretty sure it's going to be in my top 5 favorites of the summer. Why? It's got Shaun of the Dead, Harold, Charlie Bartlett, Sylar, Eomer, Bruce Banner, and Madea in it. How could it not be awesome... (link)

    4. Erin, the New Receptionist From The Office Pam has had my heart for a long time. But her and Jim were a little too mushy last night. As punishment, my heart has been given to Erin for one week. We'll see if Pam learns her lesson by next Thursday. It's the finale. I'd hate to see my heart with Erin for the whole summer, but I'm prepared to go through with it... (link)

    5. Manny Ramirez Let me get this straight. One of the biggest hitters in baseball tested positive for drugs? That is such a completely original and never heard of news item! And on top of that, he was on a women's fertility drug that's typically used to bring your body back to normal after doing steroids? What, he decided that now that he's swoll he wants to have his own baby? I guess once your biological clock starts ticking... (link)

    AIS8: Top Three...

This week's results show made me sweat!

I'm a big Danny Gokey fan, and after Tuesday night's last note, I was worried. Every week, I read Entertainment Weekly and E! about how they think Danny is terrible and needs to go. Tsk, tsk... Journalistic bias is so unbecoming... But the order that they reveled the top three last night really made me worry.

But now it's over. Allison went home, making my prediction of Kris' departure wrong. This, of course, brings my record to 6 for 11*. Ugh...

    Some thoughts...

    Adam Lambert
  • Whoa... He does the Axel Rose screech and Slash is the mentor. Sweet...
  • He told him to not improvise so much in the higher register. Not sure if he listened very much...
  • Wow! SO much makeup...
  • Perfect choice of Led Zepplin...

    Allison Irahita
  • Eh... I'm already emotionally checked out on her, so I didn't pay much attention...

    Kris Allen
  • I called him doing Come Together before it even started...
  • It wasn't bad, but his vocals don't even deserve to be on the same planet as the other three...

    Danny Gokey
  • He really made Kris look bad on the duet...
  • Great song choice...
  • Last note. Ugh...
  • AIS8: Top Four Prediction Guess...

Wow. I'm not quite sure how I feel about rock night. Big successes. Big falls. But one things for sure, Slash was awesome. Not so much as a mentor, but just in general.

I think the four remaining contestants all gave final four worthy performances. But there was definitely a pecking order. For me, the elimination is going to come down to being between Kris and Allison. Allison's solo performance got more criticism than Kris', but her duet with Adam closed the show. And it was really good. So, because she was able to close things out, I think Kris will be the one going home.

    Count it...

    Web Wednesday: Hospital Food...

    It's Web Wednesday!

This has got to be one of the more interesting picture blogs I've ever seen. It's a user submitted picture catalog of hospital food from around the world. Pretty sweet. So to speak...

    Check it out here...

    A Heartbreaking Sight...

I'm helping house/dog sit for some friends this week. This come with a few perks: HDTV, some peace and quiet, and a giant DVD library (just to name a few). But who knew it'd also come with such heavy, heartbreaking moments?

When I came home today, I got out of my car and paused, thinking that I saw something on the ground in front of my wheels. As I walked closer, I noticed it was a baby bird. Looking to the right, I saw two more. Looking a little to the left I saw another. They had clearly fallen out of their nest. And since they hadn't yet developed feathers and their legs weren't even strong enough to allow them to stand, they were certainly doomed.

"What should I do?", I thought.

So, after Tommy came home, we grabbed some straw and a bucket and made a make shift nest for the little birdies. Then, we hung it in a tree in an effort to keep it away from any predators (or the two dogs we're watching). Hopefully, the mama bird finds them and feeds them...

Weird Cell Phone Picture: #20 (Chain of Fools)...

Throughout the city of Columbia, there are many outdoor art projects. I'm not sure if this is one of them...

I've never really known what the purpose of the chain is. I'm not sure if it's art, advertisement, or if its some type of actually functional thing.

But whatever it is, it's pretty cool...

    5/01/2009

    Power Rankings: 7...

Reading power rankings on the internet is like changing behind a towel that your mom is holding up on the beach when you're a kid. You do it because you have to, not because you like it. Unless I write them. Then it's like sitting in front of the TV on a Saturday morning with the remote and a bowl of Lucky Charms: awesome...

    1. Tony Stark's Goatee After USAToday put out the first pic from Iron Man 2, was there any doubt that the greatest facial hair in the history of planet earth (on one of the greatest actors) would shoot to the top of the rankings? This, by the way, counts as post #4... (link)

    2. Swine Flu Tough to ignore the swine flu this week. I've only recently found out that it doesn't turn you into a were-pig during the full moon. I am, of course, kidding. But as dumb as that sounds, it still doesn't compare to the sound bite that came from Vice President Bidden on Thursday. Looks like the Daily Show has found their Obama Era punchline... (link)

    3. Grooveshark Any song I want to listen to, anytime I want it, for free? Yes please... (link)

    4. The Soloist I can't emphasize enough just how good this movie is. See it. The story is remarkable. The acting is incredible. But the grace that it displays is the most honest and beautiful that I've seen in a long time. See it... (link)

    5. New Transformers 2 Trailer Two summers ago, Transformers won the Part of the Process: Favorite Summer Movie vote. If this trailer is any indication, I can see the sequel being the heavy favorite to take the trophy this summer... (link)
